Why limit yourself, right--use color or b&w whenever you feel the need! This is a fine hybrid of both effective color and black and white--the blue diamond seems to be almost three-dimensional.
Sometimes colour seems to get in the way of what I do best with just the black pen, but I agree with you this hybrid works. I think this drawing is generally what I'm after, a sort of harmonious tension.
