Hello Dave,
think of nether-stices as being a secret, remote, surreal place - a bit like detour through a dark brain. The word was an instinctive stab at describing something there are no words for.
In hindsight, I can see that interstice, which IS in the dictionary, is "a small space between things closely set, or between the parts which compose a body" also "a space between atoms in a lattice where other atoms can be located".
Which, you may think, is quite boggling enough without having to invent 'netherstices'. So perhaps interstices are scientific, and netherstices are one poetic remove from them. Anyway...where's this bottom then?
