Heavy Rain

Something bold and simple from me this week, for Illustration Friday: Rain.

I have an ambivalent feeling towards rain. In the right place, at the right time, I think a heavy squall is utterly exhilarating - and I feel like laughing and throwing away the tatty wreck that the latest cheap umbrella has become. You set out and find yourself mildly irritated by the precipitation interfering with your vision and spots of moisture starting to change your smart appearance, then further on you cross the threshold into an abandonment of teeth gritting, and a joyful acceptance of the experience.

Here's a second take on my drawing - I cannot decide which I like best.

I like the simple, graphic quality of both...the added color in the bottom one is very nice. I know what you mean about rain...personally, I've had enough. It seems like it rains for almost two weeks straight, the sun comes out for a few days, and then it starts all over again. Ugh! I would like it to rain just on days when i have lots of stuff to do indoors so i don;t feel like i'm missing a good day!

thanks for the comments all...

we need some of your rain Carla - England is a very dry place at the moment! I love those indoor days where you get up early and decide its going to be an indoor day from the outset.

It struck me these illustrations look like a slightly dark version of a childrens alphabet, not the intention but that's how they've come out. So which has the greater tension between jolly and depressing, I dunno.

Anyway, like you like the colour Joy Eliz - it's a way I want to go in general, using my own drawn textures but coloured in Photoshop. (Rather than using set Photoshop textures all the time - which is less me)

Ian, is it also British to keep forgetting one's umbrella do you think? I do it all the time, but luckily there's a whole lot of other people that are equally absentminded, so that there's a whole lot of left brollies in circulation!
